This month I magically finished 8 books! I do no know how I did it, but I read 2 Fantasy, 2 Sci-Fi, 2 Chick Lit, 1 Thriller, and 1 CLAS (chick lit and smut). Not all were winners, but below are my reviews for each book. I hope that you find something to enjoy!
A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses #3) by Sarah J. Maas - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5. I am obsessed with this series! I don't want to give too much away, but buy the book! Buy the entire box set while you are at it. You will not regret it!
A Court of Frost and Starlight (A Court of Thorns and Roses #3.1) by Sarah J. Maas- ⭐⭐⭐/5. This book is the the 4th installment in the ACOTAR series. However, it is considered book 3.1 of the series due to its length. It is a much shorter book in both length, and substance. I enjoyed it, don't' get me wrong, but I was used to the action packed, drama filled, love story of the first 3 books. This is still a must read as you work your way through the series. One more to go for me.
Upgrade by Blake Crouch- ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5. A few years ago I read Recursion, also by Crouch, and loved it. So, when this book was an option for Book of the Month, I instantly chose it as my monthly selection. Logan Ramsay is an agent with the GPA, a government agency focused on preventing gene manipulation. While on a raid, Logan is caught in an ambush where he is infected with a gene altering virus. After weeks in the hospital, battling extreme fevers, he is release with a clean bill of health. However, Logan quickly learns that the attack was targeted... by his dead mother. As Logan continues to feel the side effects of his upgrade, the larger picture begins to unfold. This story is a fast paced, action packed adventure from start to finish.
Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren - ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5. A quick and easy pallet cleanser after reading Upgrade, this story is a cute chick lit. Hazel is at a BBQ at her best friend Emily's house. While there, she quickly realizes that her TA in college, that she had a major crush on, is actually Emily's brother Josh. Having not been compatible then, it is clear that these two will just be friends now... or will they? In a classic forced proximity and friends to lovers trope, Hazel and Josh eventually fall for one another. A cute, easy read, that will have you asking all of your friends if their brothers are single.
The Lifestyle by Taylor Hahn- ⭐⭐/5. This was my free add on for my birthday pick via BOTM. What I thought was going to be an interesting take on a chick lit, turned out to be a huge let down for me. Georgina is living her dream life. At least she believes that she is. That all changed the night that she walked in on her husband with another woman. After chatting with a colleague about her husband's infidelity, she is convinced that the only logical next step is to start swinging. Yes, she wants her and her husband to become swingers to fix their marriage issues. Things get more complicated and even messier, when Georgina's two best friends also convince their significant others to join in on the fun. I disliked the characters, they were unreliable and sketchy. The writing was also not my favorite, and the outcome of the story lines were unbelievable. Pass.
The Lion's Den by Katherine St John- ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5. Belle is a struggling actress in L.A., working as a waitress to make ends meet. So when her childhood friend Summer, invites her on an all expenses paid vacation on a luxury yacht, courtesy of her much older boyfriend, of course she says yes! However, Belle's dream vacation quickly takes a turn when she and the other girls onboard feel more like prisoner than welcomed guests. This book gives us a dual timeline, sharing current day yacht life, while slowly uncovering parts of Sumer and Belle's past. As bits and pieces are revealed, things start to click for the reader. There were a few twists that I did not see coming, which I always love in a thriller. Full of drama, mystery, murder, and suspense. Will Belle make it off the yacht?
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams-⭐⭐⭐/5 . This was our monthly selection for the book club that I am in. Sadly I missed our meeting, but there were very mixed reviews from the group. We had a 1 star and a 4 star, so the group was literally all over the place. Even after finishing this book, I am still not entirely sure what it is about. An Earthling, Arthur Dent, is forcibly removed from his home, right before Earth is destroyed. He then begins his journey through the galaxy with Ford Prefect, and their copy of The Hitch Hiker's Guide. Full of odd encounters, the ultimate questions, and space exploration, this eclectic story sure is an interesting one. Also a film, that can be found on Amazon.
Put Me in Detention by Meghan Quinn- ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5. This book is a BRAD (beach read after dark). Cora is on her divorcation with her best girlfriends, celebrating her divorce, when she gets drunk and marries Pike (who happens to be a teacher at the school that her brother and best friends work at). The twist, Pike does not want a divorce. Full of ups and down, and a lot of steamy scenes, this CLAS was just what I wanted to read while everyone goes back to school.
